Lesson 2 – Part 6: Masks of Eternity
Original journal entry from June 1, 2025 – Response to Lesson 2: Masks of Eternity. This was my reflection at the end of the Campbell interviews, where I unpacked the differences between his view of God as an impersonal, all-encompassing force (like Brahman) and my biblical belief in a personal Creator who exists outside creation and invites relationship through the Holy Spirit.
Wow, so much to unpack here! In this interview it becomes more clear where Campbell and I differ in our belief about God. He recalls his experience with a priest asking him whether he believed in a personal relationship with God and Campbell said no. I find it difficult to wrap my head around the theory of God’s creation and yet also omnipotence. In Campbell’s explanation, God is essentially what the Hindus believe about Brahman. Brahman is everything, the universe and everything in it. I suppose this is the same belief regarding The Force.
However, the Bible is clear that God is not everything but rather that He created everything. God exists outside of everything that exists. God was there first and then He spoke everything into existence. God created Brahman. God created The Force. And then the Bible teaches that God created humans in His image to have a relationship with. So again, God is personal. God created humans for a personal relationship.
I’ve heard Christian believers try to make the connection with The Force, saying that the Holy Spirit is the same as The Force. However, I believe this view is wrong. To begin with, as I mentioned earlier, God exists outside of His creation, and therefore, God exists outside of The Force. God, being Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In simple terms, God as the Father sits on the throne and governs everything that He created. People often ask, if God is all powerful, why do bad things happen to good people? God is just. God is fair. Having created humans in His image He had to allow humans to do what we want, even if it’s not what He wants. If He created humans for personal relationship, then humans have to have the ability to choose not to be in this relationship. Which, consequently, resulted in humans’ spiritual death, because if God created everything that is alive then trying to live without Him results in death. But God, as the Son, conceived by His Spirit in a woman’s womb, was born and raised as a human, became the mediator between God and man, being born of both, made it possible for God to live inside of His creation, by the Holy Spirit. The Bible teaches that God will not force anyone to receive Him to live on the inside; it says that He stands at the door and knocks and that He is inviting us to open up our hearts to Him to have fellowship.
As I mentioned in my introduction, I’ve had many spiritual experiences in my life, I have prayed for people who got healed or learned to hear what the Holy Spirit is saying. That’s because I responded to the knocking and I have invited God to come and live inside my heart. God, as the Holy Spirit, lives on the inside and we have fellowship. It turns out that He knows a lot about the world that He created and I was kinda lost, not really knowing how things are supposed to work.
I’ve decided to pursue Jediism because so much of my life and belief system aligns with it. Or I might rather say that the same beliefs can be found when I the Bible. But Campbell and I differ on how The Force “works.” As I mentioned, God exists outside of The Force. And if there is a dark side of The Force, then it is neither good nor evil… it just is. Like money, we can use it for good or for evil, but in itself it is neutral. I suppose that The Force can be likened to God’s justice system. I know, I know, this can get complicated and confusing really quickly 😬 But as I mentioned above, God is just; He is fair. The universe and the unseen realm run on the laws that God put in place. For example the concept of sowing and reaping- it works for everyone. If you sow good seed you will reap an abundance of good things. Conversely, if you sow seeds of evil and destruction you will reap an abundance of those things. In the same way, we can use the force for bringing good into our world, or we can use it for our purposes and create problems in our world. We have free will to choose how we use it.

Looking back now: This entry was a pivotal moment — clearly articulating where Campbell's impersonal view of the divine diverged from my personal, relational experience of God through the Holy Spirit. It also marked an early affirmation that pursuing Jediism could enrich (rather than replace) my existing faith.
