Lesson 3 – Part 4: The 16 Teachings
Original journal entry from July 1, 2025 (edited July 1, 2025) – Response to Lesson 3: Introduction to Temple Doctrine (Part 4: The 16 Teachings). This was my detailed reflection on each of the 16 Teachings, exploring how they guide awareness, balance, humility, compassion, and participation in the Force's eternal cycles.
1. Jedi feel the Force.
We are aware of its omnipresence and its flow. We endeavor to live in balance with it as it manifests in all worldly phenomena, the dynamic equilibrium of its flow which transcends space-time from the smallest quark to the greatest expanse of the cosmos. Living in balance with The Force is the core value of a Jedi.
The Force is all around me and inside me and in all things visible and invisible. While I could live in complete ignorance of the Force, if I choose to live that way, as a Jedi, my focus in life is to always live with perfect awareness of the Force and what it is doing in the world. As I strive to live in perfect harmony with the Force, I partner with the Force in bringing about the will of the Force in any area I have influence over.
Following from the First Teaching:
2. To be in balance, the Jedi practice clarity of mind. Aware that representations of the world can cloud our understanding, the Jedi center their awareness through the practice of meditation and contemplation.
In everyday life, it can become difficult to perceive the prompting of the Force. Different things in my life can tempt me to get emotional and distracted from the task at hand. The way I combat these distractions is through regular meditation and contemplation, bringing my attention back and away from the distractions.
Following from the Second Teaching:
3. Jedi maintain a clarity of awareness that all events are interconnected. The balance of the Force is a flowing continuum; it flows around us and through us, allowing us to adapt to change arising in its eternal cycles of creation and renewal.
Living in perfect harmony with the Force, I won’t be caught by surprise by sudden changes. I am in tune with the will and the ways of the Force and I act accordingly. Some things might not make logical sense in the moment but as I trust that the Force connects all things, so I move forward with confidence.
Following from the Third Teaching:
4. Jedi practice non-attachment, maintaining an awareness that the cycles of creativity and renewal in the Force give rise to phenomena as others pass away.
On the scale of infinity, I am but a mist that is here one day and gone the next. Things in my life are not as important as the people. Money and possessions are at best a means by which I connect with the people who are here with me during my short time slot. The Force may bring things into my life and remove them when they have served their purpose.
Following from the Fourth Teaching:
5. Jedi comprehend that we are beings of thought, feeling, and will, who flourish within the Force through self-aware action and lifelong learning.
While I am exist as a part of the Force, the Force has a will and I have the freedom to align my will and my actions with it. But I am not forced to act in agreement with the Force. However, the more I partner with the Force in every aspect of life, the more I will thrive. Through lifelong learning, I can excel in this partnership.
Following from the Fifth Teaching:
6. The Jedi practice humility. Jedi know that we are processes in The Force and exist within its cycles of creativity and renewal. The more we practice humility, the more open we become to insights of wisdom which come to us through our feeling of the Force.
Walking in humility enables me to learn more and better. I don’t know everything and I never will. I live with the attitude that in every situation I can learn something new. No two situations are ever exactly the same even if they appear to be. As I become more sensitive to the Force I increasingly learn to see the difference.
Following from the Sixth Teaching:
7. The Jedi foster an acceptance of limitations. To change the world is to change our perceptions of and perspectives towards it. Indeed, we are capable of amazing acts, especially when we rely on the flow of the Force. Yet, as incarnated, organic beings we must understand that the power is that of the Force, without which we are mere matter.
There are limits to what I can do, especially with my physical body. The Force enables me to do things that I cannot do without it. Acting physically may not always be the most effective way to solve a problem but rather a shift in perspective may offer a simpler solution.
Following from the Seventh Teaching:
8. The Jedi practice patience. All creation and renewal in the flow of the Force, all the wonder and terror of its processes, arise and dissolve in eternity – the present moment, the now. With the practice of acceptance and patience, Jedi have the tenacity to attend with curiosity to the phenomena in our experience which proceed one from another, ad infinitum.
Things will happen at their appointed time. While I may prefer some things to happen faster I accept that there are things I cannot control. I move forward with the Force when it is time to move forward and I wait patiently then it is time to wait. As I am waiting I engage with the present moment as I don’t know if it will never happen again.
Following from the Eighth Teaching:
9. The Jedi maintain integrity, our individuated wholeness. We practice to foster the awareness of our interconnection with all other phenomena, thus ensuring authenticity in our interactions with others and our capacity to accept our limitations and those in interaction with us.
I am a part of the whole and anything I do affects the whole. Therefore, I live in such a way that anything I do will not only benefit me but benefit the whole. My interactions are authentic and it would be naive to think that there would be anything I could hide since I am just a part of the whole. My actions are never independent from the whole.
Following from the Ninth Teaching:
10. The first and foremost service a Jedi performs is devotion to our learning. Only by curating our individuated, authentic, whole being-ness, can we serve in more collaborative ways, participating in the creative, renewing flow of the Force. With our devotion to the discipline of universal compassion in the Force, we embody the source of love and harmony we bring into the world.
It is so important to emphasize learning and sharing what is learned because an individual life can be so short. Anything the individual learns is shared with the whole so that when the individual is gone the group retains what was learned by the individual.
Following from the Tenth Teaching:
11. The Jedi practice living in universal compassion, understanding the phenomena of our environment. We cultivate a particular sensitivity to when feelings of fear, anger, hatred, and aggression germinate within us. These emotions are among our limitations as incarnated, organic beings. We bring to these feelings hope, pardon, and love in equal measure to bring us back into balance with the movement of the Force.
It is important to maintain balance in my life. As a spirit with a soul who lives in a body, I have limitations in each aspect and negative emotions will cause imbalance. Therefore, it is imperative to focus on positive emotions to balance any of the negative.
Following from the Eleventh Teaching:
12. Unconditional love and compassion are central in the life of the Jedi. Where imbalance arises, we bring only so much love, pardon, faith, hope, clarity, and joy as is necessary to restore the dynamic equilibrium in our phenomenal environment.
Balance is more important than perceived justice. Holding grudges or withholding love and compassion creates imbalance. I can bring balance back into my life by letting go of any debt that I think the other owes me. With healthy boundaries in place, I can act with love, pardon, faith, hope, clarity, and joy toward the other.
Following from the Twelfth Teaching:
13. The Jedi cultivate empathy with others. Maintaining a keen sensitivity to when the feelings of fear, anger, hatred, and aggression move within us, we empathically and compassionately comprehend how these feelings also arise in others. Those whom we perceive as adversaries also share these limitations. With this understanding, we respond to imbalance so as to return harmony to the flow of interactions.
Everyone can have feelings of fear, anger, hatred, or aggression but the problem is not with them coming up but rather with how I deal with them. Being sensitive to the Force, I can perceive these feelings and distinguish whether they are mine or someone else’s. To bring balance into the situation I act with empathy towards the other when I perceive these feelings coming from them.
Following from the Thirteenth Teaching:
14. The Jedi seek to return balance to that which has become tumultuous. Pain is one of the few real things we have access to, and as such, we are dedicated to alleviating it insomuch as is within our limitations. The clarity of understanding we cultivate permits us to know how and when to offer help to those in need and gives us the courage to do so.
Wherever I encounter someone in pain, it is for me to find a way to help alleviate it. However, I am limited because I cannot just take pain away. Just like for myself, I cannot just make it disappear. But rather I am on a path of learning how to bring balance to imbalance and I bring this knowledge into the painful situation.
Following from the Fourteenth Teaching:
15. The Jedi realize that all phenomena, including that of life itself, arise from and dissolve back into the cycles of creation and renewal of the Force. We are aware of the interconnectedness and the continuum of all phenomena, that unconditional love and compassion are central to us, and that pain is real. When we must bear witness to the dissolution of those we care for in our and their limited, incarnated, organic capacity, we must extend our compassion, our faith, and our comprehension to re-balance that which we otherwise would feel as loss. The Force only creates and renews, it does not deprive.
The Force is all around and in everything and every phenomena. In the Force, all things are connected and all things have their place and time. When my time comes it comes and when it is over it is over. And it is the same way for every thing and every being. The Force continually creates and recreates, moving from one phenomena to another. Like a wave in the ocean, the water takes the form of the wave and when the wave has reached its destination the wave is gone and the water returns to the ocean.
Following from the Fifteenth Teaching:
16. Following All the Teachings offered here, and as witnessed by the thousands of generations who have come before us, the Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most sincere soul. These teachings are difficult to practice, but their benefits are great. With continuous training, centering and balancing meditation, humble understanding, and receptivity, we may participate in the experience of being alive more fully, more harmoniously, and more creatively. Then we may return into the Force from which we have come by the same integrity with which we have lived. In this way, our Spirit will go forth, bringing balance through love, pardon, faith, hope, light, and some joy to generations yet to come.
Through practicing and applying these principles, I can live a more fulfilling life. All things are benefited by my commitment to and living out these teachings well. And when I have reached my destination and the Force recreates something new from me, the memories others have of me will live on, continuing to positively impact their lives.

Looking back now: This entry represents one of the deepest dives in the early series — walking through all 16 Teachings with both explanation and personal application. It felt like a culmination of Lesson 3, solidifying how the doctrine could shape not just understanding but daily living, compassion, and legacy.
